This Pill Promises to Extend Life for a Nickel a Pop

From the Wired Magazine website

NIR BARZILAI HAS a plan. It’s a really big plan that might one day change medicine and health care as we know it. Its promise: extending our years of healthy, disease-free living by decades.

And Barzilai knows about the science of aging. He is, after all, the director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. And, as such, he usually talks about his plan with the caution of a seasoned researcher. Usually. Truth is, Barzilai is known among his colleagues for his excitability—one author says he could pass as the older brother of Austin Powers—and sometimes he can’t help himself. Like the time he referred to his plan—which, among other things, would demonstrate that human aging can be slowed with a cheap pill—as “history-making.”

Webmaster Comments logoWhen a retiree passes away, the surviving spouse, or children are often unsure about what they should do regarding the military retiree’s pay and benefits.

One the maroon bar above, there are several topics with dropdown menus. Under “Bereavement” is a post called “When a Retiree Passes”. Retiree News just updated the post, especially the contact information.

Please take some time to review the post so you know what information is available when you really need it.

Additionally, in the “Military Funeral Honors” is a link to the Office of the Secretary Defense website which outlines all the different protocols dealing with military honors. While there are many opinions about what a retiree is entitled to when he/she passes, this is the Department of Defense’s source of the law, policies and procedures.

The “Lost Insurance Polices” post remains current, but will be expanded soon with additional information.

The “Understanding the Responsibilities of an Executor” remains current.

DC dozen: 12 travel tips for the capital

From the Military Times website

As the summer travel season continues

No matter how long or well-planned the trip, Washington’s cultural and historical offerings are too vast to cover in a single getaway. As one Facebook commenter noted when we asked readers for their D.C. travel tips, “However long you think you need for your trip, add two days.”

Rather than an exhaustive list of memorials, maps to the museums or guides to guided tours, here are a dozen smaller items to keep in mind whether you’re in town for a day, planning a family vacation or settling in for a Pentagon assignment.

As always, a word about military discounts: Many hotels, attractions and restaurants in D.C. offer them, but always check before you arrive to see if the online price is still in effect, confirm eligibility rules and determine what identification you’ll need to claim the deal. However, unlike other cities, most of the prime tourist attractions are free of charge, so discounts may not be a driver as you plan your stay.

Happy 4th of July!

Fourth of July 2017

It was a fight for our freedom, against a sovereign King.
Americans fought, and sacrificed most everything.
It was the principle: to live by our own morals and laws.
Until victory over the British, Americans would not pause.

To defend America’s independence – we were prepared.
And on this day in 1776, Thomas Jefferson officially declared:
Americans deserve to observe their own customs and rights!
And for this sake, our forefathers were willing to fight!

More than eight years of war before we’d officially win,
And we still use this day to celebrate this country we live in.
Even if you’re an American celebrating from abroad,
You are part of a tradition, a history, and a country we applaud.

So, cheers! Here’s to land of the free, the home of the brave!
We thank our ancestors and first Americans who were able to pave
Their way to a country run by its people, not a ruler.
Happy birthday to a nation that couldn’t be cooler!
