From the Kiplinger Magazine website

Retirement. What does that word mean to you? If you are like most people, it is the end of a journey. But you would be WRONG! That is a stark reality that many retirees are discovering after they leave the workplace and begin the longest vacation of their lives.

If you have asked yourself, “Have I prepared well enough for retirement?” or “Do I have enough to retire?” then keep reading.

Today is Armed Forces Day

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

Senior Discounts Aren’t Just for Seniors Anymore

From The New York Times website

Maybe they are embarrassed about their age. Or unaware of the many discount programs for seniors. Or simply thinking about something else.

All are reasons that seniors may not ask for or receive the discounts they qualify for at myriad retailers. After all, a Walgreens cashier can’t be expected to automatically deduct the 20 percent senior discount the chain offers on certain Tuesdays. And many shoppers — particularly those who are just in their 50s, for whom there are fewer offers — aren’t in the habit of asking if a discount is an option.

Balikatan 2017

U.S. Air Force Photo by Tech. Sgt. Andrew L. Jackson

Members of Hawaii National Guard and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, 525th Engineers, partners in the National Guard’s State Partnership Program, construct a split sole wall shore during a subject matter expert exchange in support of Balikatan 2017 at Fort Magsaysay in Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija, May 7, 2017.

These skills ensure that first responders and military members can secure and remove victims during a real-life crisis. Balikatan is an annual U.S.-Philippine bilateral military exercise focused on a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and counterterrorism.

Retiree Sightings: At the recent funeral services for Miles Aoki, we had the opportunity to “catch up” with several retirees. Among the retirees present were: Robert Finley, Clarence Fukumoto, Roy Matsumura, David Murray, Vince Nishina, Alan Shinsato, and Dennis Takeshita. It’s unfortunate that funeral services are the rare times retirees get to reminisce.

More Retiree Sightings: Recently we ran into Yolanda Valiente at Kaukini Hospital, where she repairs electronic medical equipment. Yolanda says she plans to retire in three years. She retired from the HIANG as serving many years in the 201st Combat Communications Group.

Retiree Email: We had a quick email exchange with Hank S. Laguatan, who works for the Veterans Administration in Seattle. Hank was a recruiter with the HIANG for several years. He promised more info so Retiree News could do a Retiree Update post on him.

New Supreme Court Decision Has Serious Implications For Ex-Military Spouses

From the Task and Purpose website

A U.S. Supreme Court decision handed down on May 15 may have serious implications for former spouses of veterans, despite providing clarity regarding disability pay from the Department of Veterans Affairs. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court sided in favor of a veteran who believed he did not owe his ex-wife 20% of that pay, and ruled that state courts cannot order veterans to pay divorced spouses for the loss of his or her retirement pay caused by service-related disability benefits.

One of These Experimental Aircraft Replace the Legendary A-10 Warthog

From the Task and Purpose website

There’s a damn good reason the A-10 Thunderbolt II, lovingly nicknamed the “Warthog” by U.S. Air Force pilots, is considered the best close-air support attack aircraft in the Pentagon’s arsenal.

Built by Fairchild Republic in the early 1970s, the characteristic “BRRRT” of the A-10’s 30 millimeter cannon tends to strike fear into the hearts of all who hear it, earning a reputation as “a badass airplane with a big gun on it,” as Martha McSally, a Republican congresswoman and the Air Force’s first female fighter pilot, put it in April: “The folklore as A-10 pilots that we pass around is that we built the gun, and told the engineers, ‘Figure out how to fly this gun.’”
