Any one of these events could trigger the need to revise your estate plan by making adjustments to your will or creating an amendment to your trust or reassigning beneficiary(s); both primary and contingent.

Here are five considerations to see if you have any estate housekeeping to do…

Social Security provides monthly benefits to eligible retired workers and their families. As retirement nears, an individual must decide at which age to start receiving benefits. Benefits may be claimed before, at, or after full retirement age (FRA), which varies depending on year of birth. Benefits claimed before reaching FRA are permanently reduced, but they are collected over a longer period.

How Family Caregivers Can Ease the Financial Burden

From the U.S. News & World Report website

If you’re a caregiver for a family member who is ill or has special needs, money is always in the background.

It’s unavoidable. When people are sick or need special attention, it costs money; money you may not have. In fact, a new annual AARP Research Report, which surveyed 1,864 family caregivers between July 18 and Aug. 28, 2016, indicates that family caregivers spend an average of $6,954 in out-of-pocket expenses related to caregiving.

And if you have money problems while caring for a family member, your lack of funds only makes it harder to help them.

The good news: there are things you can try.

Ransomware Turns to Big Targets—With Even Bigger Fallout

cybersecurity-graphic

An Austrian hotel lost control of its door locks, keeping new guests stranded in the lobby. A police department in Cockrell Hill, Texas abandoned years of video evidence and digital documentation. In Washington, DC, the police couldn’t access its CCTV footage storage system days before Donald Trump’s inauguration. All of this news came out in the last week, stemming from a rapid escalation of how ransomware is deployed. And it’s only going to get worse.

Ransomware has existed in various forms for over a decade. In a classic ransomware scenario, malware storms your computer, encrypts your data, and won’t give you the decryption key unless you pay a fee, usually in Bitcoin. Variations involve holding specific equipment, like your keyboard, hostage until you pay the ransom.

But over the last 18 months, ransomware attacks have increasingly targeted large organizations and systems rather than individuals. One big payout from a group that can afford it beats stringing together lots of small payments from individuals. At this point, ransomware attacks are a $1 billion-per-year business. And, more importantly, the trend is creating collateral damage like never before.

Retiree Update: Kyle Breedlove

Kyle Breedlove served as the commander of the then 154th Communications Flight. He retired in the nineties and continued working as a Navy contractor for several years.

In 2005, he returned to his home in Indiana. Kyle reported that his wife Barbara passed away in 2009.

Like many retirees, Kyle has started taking cruises. He continues to participate ballroom dancing, an activity he began in Hawaii.  The photograph shows Kyle and his dance partner, Rose, at a dance function.

Great to see Kyle still wears his Ryen’s aloha shirts.

Shingles Vaccine Cuts Chronic Pain, Hospitalizations

From the Health Day website

Vaccination greatly reduces the risk of serious complications from shingles, a new study finds.

From the Army Times website

The Air Force is considering offering hundreds of thousands of dollars to pilots who agree to stay on for 13 more years, in what would be a major change to its Aviator Retention Pay program.

Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, the Air Force’s personnel chief, told the House Armed Services subcommittee on military personnel Wednesday that the Air Force is also considering offering pilots contract extensions — with lucrative bonuses attached — for one year or two years, in addition to the five- and nine-year extensions that are typically offered
