Retirement: An Attitude Adjustment

Retirement next exitLast week I attended a retirement seminar at our local senior center. The moderator said we would be covering every aspect of retirement, except for money. Topics included how to find new meaning in life, what to do with your time and whether to stay in your old home or relocate to a retirement mecca.

And yet, the most important lesson I took away from the seminar hit the question of money right on the head.

Taps: Miles Aoki

Retiree News is sad to report the passing of Miles Aoki yesterday at Kaiser Hospital. A traditional Guardmember, Miles served with the 201st Combat Communications Group in the Logistics Branch after serving with Air Force.

In civilian life, Miles was the president of Rainbow Tire Company in Mapunapuna. It was a tire recapping business he started in 1984. Miles ran the company until he sold it a few years ago.

We will post information about services when available.

Retiree News extends heartfelt sympathy to Miles’ family and friends.

Thanks to Jim Townsend who emailed Retiree News.

Off Track: Oahu Eateries Memorialized

From the Tasty Island Hawaii website – article dated March 23, 2013

The recent closing of Byron’s Drive-In — a 24-hour institution in the Honolulu International Airport area — ends the final chapter in a long history of the late Andrew Wong’s restaurant empire on Oahu.

Which makes this a good time to look back in time and reflect upon all the wonderful restaurants we grew up with here in Hawaii on the island of Oahu that are no longer around.

Here’s a master list of Oahu eateries that have since closed their doors, collected from numerous online discussion boards, an old Polk Directory, Bob Sigall’s fantastic The Companies We Keep, as well as references from personal family, friends and coworkers. Links go to websites (or posts on this blog) with useful information pertaining to that particular business.

Check Six: April 2, 1942 – 75 years ago

After loading sixteen North American Aviation B-25B Mitchell medium bombers and their crews of the 17th Bombardment Group at NAS Alameda, the recently commissioned aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) departed San Francisco Bay with her escorts and headed for a secret rendezvous with Vice Admiral William F. Halsey and Task Force 16.

Check Six: F-20 Tigershark

From the Task and Purpose website

The Northrop F-20 Tigershark is arguably one of the most elegant fighter jets never built. Developed during the waning years of the Cold War, the sleek machine came equipped with the General Electric F404 turbofan engine that gave the F-20 an unbelievable acceleration and initial climb rate, positioning the fighting to “operate on short runways [and] outfight the Soviet Union’s best,” as Defense Media Network put it in 2014.

And hell, did Northrop know how to make your mouth water for a fine piece of military machinery. Just watch this classic yet enthralling early 19080s promo video for the F-20.

Why iOS 10.3 requires an extra tap to make a phone call

From the Macworld website

When you install iOS 10.3, if you haven’t already, you’ll notice that there’s now an extra step to make a phone call. Before the update, tapping on a phone number would immediately initiate a call. Now, you have to confirm that you want to dial that number before the dialing begins.

There’s a really good reason for this weird change

Here’s me with Raymond “Ray” Bermudez, and Harold DeMello on December 12, 2016 at Olomana Golf Club.  They’re both looking good as you can tell; although the Chief is not smiling, I don’t know why not.

Is the age of the travel agent dead?

From the Samantha Brown website

I love the internet, but there’s something to be said for talking an expert. For all the ways the internet has positively changed the travel industry, I’d argue that the sheer volume of information makes trip planning a lot more overwhelming. Spending hours online reading traveler reviews can’t replace the guidance, care and personal service of a good travel agent.
