ICYMI: August 2016

During August, the following postings received a high number of viewings.

K. Mark Takai 1967 – 2016 I would like to remind our Guardsmen and Reservists that call Hawaii home that they should remember Mark Takai every time they enjoy their special benefits. Mark would see me prior to every state legislative session to work out the “military appreciation package” we should push. Mark Takai would set up the bills and I would provide the testimony.

5 reasons why your Wi-Fi is slow For the two decades that the internet has been in our lives, despite all the changes and technology improvements, one constant has remained: pokey connections. Frustration quickly sets in when pages won’t load, videos buffer, or email crawls to a halt.

Will the Election Affect Social Security?

gty_social_security_dm_121108_wmainMore than a decade ago, George W. Bush made waves with his plan to allow younger workers to save a portion of their Social Security money in personal retirement accounts. The proposal was decried by some as an attack on the system, and then-President Bush’s approval rating sank as he toured the country promoting the idea.

The plan was eventually abandoned, and that marked the last time a major overhaul of the Social Security system was attempted. However, politicians have continued to look for ways to shore up the program which could, under the current funding model, run out of cash in less than 20 years.

New retiree withdrawal rate: Goodbye 4%, hello age divided by 20

moneyHow much can you safely withdraw from your retirement account each year without running out?

Well, in the good old days, you could withdraw 4% per year from your nest egg and it would last 30 years. Or at least that’s what financial planner Bill Bengen so famously wrote some 22 years ago. But now, in a world where interest rates float around zero and where investment returns are likely to be low for some time to come, blindly withdrawing 4% per year would be a disaster for your nest egg, and ultimately your standard of living.

So how might you determine a safe percentage of savings to spend in today’s world?

Dietary Supplements for the Heart

vitamin supplimentsWhen I tell patients that they need to take one or more medications to improve their cholesterol profile, many of them ask me whether a natural, over-the-counter dietary supplement would do the job just as well.

The answer is “No.”

As I mentioned earlier, because the supplement industry is not regulated by the FDA, most supplements have never undergone the rigorous scientific testing that is required for approval of a pharmaceutical product. Moreover, the research that has been performed on specific supplements — notably, antioxidants — has been very disappointing.

Will government workers facing Social Security cuts get relief?

social security 10Relief may soon be on the way for more than 2 million Americans who face big cuts in their Social Security benefits simply because they worked in government jobs that come with a pension.

The reductions stem from two little-understood rules, the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). Both are designed to prevent double-dipping from Social Security and public-sector pensions.

Check Six – 1956: First Female Guardmember Sworn In

On August 1, 1956, Captain Norma Parsons-Erb became the first woman to legally join the Air National Guard when she was sworn in as a nurse in the 106th Tactical Hospital, New York Air National Guard.

Two days earlier, Congress had enacted Public Law 845 allowing the participation of women in the National Guard. However, the law allowed for women to serve only as officers serving in nursing and other medical fields;

Before joining the Air Guard, Captain Parsons had served on active duty with the Army Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater and as an Air Force nurse in-theater Korea during the conflict. Parsons-Erb retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1967.

Women could not enter the Air Guard in non-nursing fields until November 1967 when Congress removed a two percent personnel strength and rank ceiling limitation imposed by the Women’s Armed Services Act of 1948.  Consequently, on July 1, 1968, the National Guard Bureau authorized the states to enlisted and appoint women to non-medical positions.

hands on keyboardHopes have been high that digital technology would improve seniors’ health care, but a new study suggests that few older Americans are on board.

The study, which surveyed thousands of Medicare patients, found that only 5 percent to 8 percent were going online to fill prescriptions, deal with health insurance or communicate with their doctors. And only 16 percent were searching for health information online.
