Gary Sinise to receive West Point’s Thayer Award

Gary Sinise“To be recognized with such a distinguished honor is truly a privilege,” Sinise said in the release, “and I hope that this recognition only helps to further shine a light on the continuing mission of supporting those who serve and defend our great country.”

The award dates back to 1958. Current guidelines rule out West Point graduates from consideration, although President Eisenhower and General Douglas MacArthur earned the award in 1961 and 1962, respectively, with MacArthur making an oft-quoted acceptance speech.

Arthritis and Vitamin D: What’s the Connection?

Vitamin D got its nickname, “the sunshine vitamin,” because sun exposure helps promote vitamin D production in the body. This essential nutrient is also found naturally in a few foods such as oily fish (mackerel, salmon) and is used to fortify milk, baby formula, cereal, and juice. But changing lifestyles and diets mean that many of us are lacking in vitamin D. In fact, it’s estimated that about 75 percent of American teens and adults don’t get enough vitamin D, and studies suggest that this may play a role in several chronic diseases, including arthritis.

Meet Joe Heck, the One-Star General Who Could Take Reid’s Senate Seat

Military experience? Check. Small business owner? Check. Physician? Check. Congressional leadership? Check. Winning record in swing district? Check. National security election? Double check.

Nevada Rep. Joe Heck has gone from flat-out no to “at least 50-50” in a potential run for retiring Harry Reid’s Senate seat, but as the run-up to 2016 continues to push national security to the forefront, the GOP has to like the Republican’s odds.

Last month, the congressman sat patiently through the House Armed Services Committee’s 18-hour markup of the annual defense authorization bill as Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, repeatedly redirected questions about benefits reforms to Heck, who leads the military personnel subcommittee. For decades the Pentagon has been warning about ballooning personnel costs, but Congress has blocked efforts to change the system. In just four months as personnel chief, Heck made some headway: many of his recommendations are now part of the House’s version of the NDAA, including a proposal to dramatically change military retirement.

ACA logoUnder the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all Americans including all military members (active duty, retired, Selected Reserve, or Retired Reserve) and their eligible family members must have health care coverage that meets a minimum standard called minimum essential coverage or pay a fee. Your TRICARE coverage meets the minimum essential coverage requirement under the ACA.

“The term “active duty” means full-time duty in the active service of a uniformed service for more than 30 consecutive days”.

An IRS Form 1095 documents you (and your family members, if applicable) have the minimum essential coverage. More information will be forthcoming about the delivery method of these forms.

These forms will document the information that DFAS will provide to the IRS on yourself and your authorized family members. The forms will be required to be reported with your 2015 federal tax return. DFAS will provide you with IRS Form 1095 series forms no later than Jan. 31, 2016.
