Fires have the potential to destroy everything in your home. After a fire, you can replace 95 percent of the items in your home, but a few things are irreplaceable, for example, photographs, computer data, family heirlooms, journals and much more. These items represent your identity, your family and the most valuable possession of all, your memories.
Five things can help protect your memories: smoke and heat monitoring, fire insurance, fireproof storage, online data backup and determination. With these things, you’ll never have to lament the things you lost in the fire.

The Hawaii Army National Guard has a great plan, a reference and a starting point. Family Emergency Preparadness Plan
General Dennis Via, commander of the Army Materiel Command, warned the cumulative impact of continued sequestration will erode readiness to the point that Army forces will be unable to respond to a future contingency. Speaking to reporters during a July 23 breakfast meeting in Washington, D.C., Via said the military is only in the second of 10 years of sequestration, but the cuts already are having an effect.
“As we look around the world, we don’t know where the next contingency will be, but we know there will be another,” Via said. Sequestration is “a constant, chipping away at readiness” until units are not ready to deploy. Army readiness affects the other services, Via added, because the Army provides 40 percent of the sustainment in a combat theater, including communications, logistics, medical services, and contracting.
“What I worry about is that sequestration impacts significantly on our ability to deter conflict” because adversaries will know US forces are not ready to respond. The funding cuts are particularly hard as the Army is trying to reset its equipment after 13 years of war. Via said the service will need overseas contingency funds for at least three more years.

Hawaii’s family caregivers are starting to get the support they need. These caregivers are among the 247,000 sons, daughters, husbands and wives who help loved ones stay independently at home for as long as possible — providing help with everyday tasks.
In mid-April nearly 500 Hawaii residents joined elder advocacy groups and resource providers in paying tribute to family caregivers at an event at the Japanese Cultural Center. The event was to recognize the extraordinary contributions they make, highlight helpful community resources and provide an update of recent legislative efforts to support caregivers and their families.

Has Patriotism become passé? Are people looking at me today when I stand and show respect for the flag, are they shaking their heads in disbelief thinking, I’m old fashioned? Am I out of step with the majority?

Sixty eight years ago, on August 3, 1946, an Executive Order of Governor Ingram M. Stainback established the Hawai‘i Air National Guard. Four Army Air Force units were accepted:
– 199th Fighter Squadron – 199th Utility Flight – Detachment “C” 199th Air Service Group– 199th Weather Station
The first 199 FS commander was Lieutenant Colonel Walter H. Dillingham. The unit’s first station was the Honolulu Armory in downtown Honolulu. Built in the 1800s, the armory was razed to make way for the new State Capitol that opened in the 1960s.

By November 4, 1946, while operating out of Bellows Air Field, Waimānalo, the 199th Fighter Squadron had recruited sufficient personnel to be recognized Federally and was approved by an Army Air Force inspection team from Hickam Field. This Federal recognition is the official start of the Hawai‘i Air National Guard.

Looking for a miracle diet food? It’s time to call off the search — there’s no such thing. “If you take in more calories than you expend, you gain weight,” says David Katz, M.D., of the Yale Prevention Research Center in Derby, Connecticut. “It’s simple biology, and no milkshake or mackerel can save you from that fate.”
