Military Tribute to Robin Williams

The Pentagon issued a rare tribute to an entertainer on Tuesday. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, in a statement, said “the entire Defense Department community mourns the loss of Robin Williams,” whom he described as “a gifted actor and comedian, but … also a true friend and supporter of our troops.” Hagel noted that Williams had entertained “thousands of service men and women in war zones” and his philanthropy supported numerous causes “that helped veterans struggling with hidden wounds of war.”

The Twitterverse on Tuesday filled with stories from service personnel and vets on how Williams had taken the time to visit and talk with them personally, going so far as to seek out and spend time with troops who, because they were on duty, couldn’t attend his front-lines performances. Many described him as a modern-day Bob Hope.

Williams earned his first Oscar nomination for portraying Air Force Sgt. Adrian Cronauer, an Armed Forces Radio DJ, in the 1987 film, “Good Morning, Vietnam.”

The United Services Organizations, in a release, said Williams went on six USO tours between 2002 and 2013, including five overseas stints during which he visited troops in 12 foreign countries. This included three stops each in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Veterans Bring Talent, Leadership to the Workplace

This article, written by Lisa Wirthman, was in a recent Northwestern Mutual newsletter. Originally published as part of Northwestern Mutual Voice on www.Forbes.com.

More and more military veterans are re-entering the civilian workforce each year. While there are many benefits to hiring veterans, the smartest businesses understand the one that matters most: talent.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of company you are or what industry you’re in, veterans have the skills that you’re looking for,” said Lisa Rosser, CEO and founder of The Value of a Veteran, a human resources consulting and training firm.

But skills and expertise accrued in the military can get lost in translation as veterans transition to the civilian world. Many recruiters make assumptions about service members’ capabilities based on limited exposure to military activities, according to Rosser, a veteran with 10 years of active duty Army experience. “They see service members blow things up and run things over with tanks on the news,” she said.

Telemarketing Complaints Are on the Rise

Among the tens of thousands of complaints logged by state and local consumer protection agencies in 2013, the fastest-growing area of concern is related to telemarketing abuses including violations of do-not-call rights, according to the latest Consumer Complaint Survey Report issued by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators (NACPI). The most common consumer gripes were unchanged from the previous year — complaints related to auto sales and repairs, home improvement and construction, and credit and debt issues — but it’s telemarketers who are increasingly drawing the ire of consumers.

Efforts to detect Alzheimer’s disease earlier and more cheaply are focusing on signs of the ailment in the eye and sense of smell.

The Chamber of Commerce of Hawai’i hosted an event with the Honorable Senator Mazie Hirono, and the rest of the Hawai’i Congressional Delegation: Senator Brian Schatz, Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, for the inaugural Taste of Hawai’i event on July 23, 2014.  The event showcased the 50th state’s melting pot cuisine, industries and ideas. We had a blast enjoying the taste, sights, sounds of home.  We were greeted with orchid leis and visited every vendor from the state’s tourism, agriculture, food and beverage, manufacturing, and military and defense industries…over 1,000 peeps attended. You could feel and smell the ALOHA in the atmosphere.

We were able to (myself, SFC Linda Hesch, Major James Wornall and CPT Adrian Schnobrich) have a photo op with Senator Hirono, but also ran into Brig Gen Stan Osserman during the event.
