Your car insurance changes throughout your life to reflect your age and driving experience. Insurance starts off as the most expensive when you’re a teen and drops the longer you drive. By the time you reach your sixties and seventies, you may notice that the cost of auto insurance for seniors gets higher.
It’s not as pricey as it would be for a teen, but it’s considerably more than when you were in your thirties and forties.

Most Americans over age 50 prefer to remain in their current home and community as they get older, according to AARP — but to do that, many will need to increase the accessibility of their home by making home modifications.
“What not everyone considers is that you can save money by doing the right home modifications,” says DeDe Jones, a certified financial planner and managing director of Innovative Financial in Lakewood, Colorado. “The longer you can safely live in your home, the less you will need to pay for assisted living care, something that is not cheap.”
Here’s what you need to know about making home modifications as you reach your later years.

This photograph shows the 111th Army Band playing in the 154th Wing’s hanger. It was probably part of a Wing Family Day.
It was early in the F-4C Phantom era (1976-1987) because you can see the temporary wooden buildings outside the hanger door.
These two buildings on the Ewa side of the hanger housed the Avionics Branch. The 1st Floor of the Makua side of the hanger renovation went on for several months before the Avionics Branch moved back into their work space.

Kūkā‘ilimoku Newsletter Posts. Retiree News has received great positive feedback about our Kūkā‘ilimoku posts. Theodore Merrill compilated the newsletters when he served as the 154th Wing historian. It was part of his 2001 report is on file with the Air Force Historical Research Center, Maxwell AFB, Alabama.
The report contained most the issues from 1954 through 1997. There are a few months missing because of several combined issues and months without newsletters.
Retiree News will post all these issues in the coming months so readers will have the opportunity so see the entire run before our pau hana.
These old Kūkā‘ilimoku issues provide interesting views of the Hawai‘i Air National Guard over the years. Learning about early training deployments by individual and units bring back memories. Reading about young airmen being promoted who later became senior officers brings a smile. Older issues have shown several claims of “a first” happened earlier in our organization history.
Of special interest is the extensive sports program the Hawai‘i Air National Guard and the Hawai‘i National Guard had over the years. These programs faced challenges as deployment and activations began and increased.
It is truly unfortunate that a few years later, the Air Force chose to eliminate historian billets at the wing level.
Ted did a great job as the Wing historian. He was a Traditional Guardmember who served with the Honolulu Police Department. A few years after his retirements, he relocated back to Arizona to be closer to his family.

Health care at any level is expensive, but at the top of the list is nursing home care.
The national annual median cost of care for a private room in a nursing home is now $102,200, according to Genworth’s 2019 Cost of Care Survey. Adult day health care services (based on five days per week per year) cost an average $19,500 a year, the survey says. Paying those bills is beyond most people’s reach. One option is to turn to Medicaid.

Veterans receiving government benefits will see a cost-of-living boost in 2021, if Social Security officials approve one for their recipients later this year.
On Thursday, the Senate unanimously passed legislation to link the two federal payouts, sending it to the White House to become law. President Donald Trump is expected to sign the measure in the next few days.
The bill is not controversial, and routinely passes Congress each year without opposition. But, under current law, lawmakers must approve linking the two increases in order for veterans to see the pay boost. Efforts to permanently tie the two sets of increases have made little progress in recent years.
