Check Six – 1990: Pan Am Ends Hawaii Service

Pan American World Airways, originally founded as Pan American Airways and commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial flag carrier of the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. It was founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba. The airline is credited for many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraftjumbo jets, andcomputerized reservation systems. It was also a founding member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global airline industry association.

Identified by its blue globe logo (“The Blue Meatball”), the use of the word “Clipper” in its aircraft names and call signs, and the white uniform caps of its pilots, the airline was a cultural icon of the 20th century. In an era dominated by flag carriers that were wholly or majority government-owned, it was also the unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States. During most of the jet era, Pan Am’s flagship terminal was the Worldport located at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

Can You Get COVID-19 Twice?

From the WebMD website

You may have read reports that some people who recovered from COVID-19 went on to test positive a second time, raising the question: Can you get COVID-19 more than once?

The truth is: We don’t know yet how our immune system responds to this virus. So, as much as we might want to believe that this is a “one-and-done” type of virus, it would be a mistake to assume that getting COVID-19 makes you immune to getting it again.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Being an Executor

From the Kiplinger website

Whether you’re planning ahead for your own heirs or have been asked to serve as executor for someone else, it pays to understand what the role requires. The executor shoulders the fiduciary responsibility to keep track of all assets and debts for the deceased person and executes the instructions in the will for disposing the assets.

Claims against the estate could become the executor’s personal responsibility if funds aren’t handled correctly, says Hugh Drake, a partner with the Brown Hay & Stephens law firm in Springfield, Ill. The job can be a steep learning curve, especially if you know little about the deceased person’s possessions, the scope of the estate or where important papers were kept.

Here’s a step-by-step guide of what the executor will need to do

How Many Years of Retirement Should You Prepare For?

From the Motley Fool website

“Retirement is like a long vacation in Las Vegas. The goal is to enjoy it to the fullest, but not so fully that you run out of money.” This quote from Jonathan Clements is as apt a description as you can get.

Unfortunately, one of the most challenging aspects of retirement planning is that you have no idea how long your money will have to last. You can’t possibly know how long you’re going to live, so it’s pretty hard to figure out how many years of spending to plan for. There is data that can give you an idea of your average life expectancy. which can be helpful to get a better idea of how large your nest egg needs to be.

Off Track: These Vehicles Are Dead for 2021

From the Car and Driver website

Trunks are an endangered species. While there are 19 vehicles listed here—one of which will merely be on sabbatical for a year—not one of them is a crossover. Okay, the Dodge Journey might plausibly be a crossover, but it’s really more like a front-drive zit with seating for five.

Every year, manufacturers tweak the model mix to reflect the market they expect to encounter in the upcoming year. Just like the cars discontinued last year, 2021 will bring far fewer two-door coupes and four-door sedans. It also means fewer small economy cars as they’re superseded by small, economy crossovers.

Will the world be better for these changes? Let’s hope 2021 is nothing but joy and life. Because, well, we’re sick of 2020, and we still have five months left.

And the 19 vehicles are:
