Are You Ready for Longevity? 4 Steps to Take Now

From the Kiplinger Magazine website

A long life is a great gift, but with the joys come some financial and legal challenges. The earlier you act to address them, the better off you and your heirs will be.

Did you know that a non-smoking 65-year-old woman today has a 50% chance of living until 88? A non-smoking 65-year-old man has a 50% chance of living until 85? That’s how life expectancy works – the longer you live, the more likely you will live longer.

Given that you could be well on your way to becoming a nonagenarian, here are four smart moves to help keep you and your family protected as you age.

The Best Breakfast Cereals for Weight Loss

From the Everyday Health website

When faced with a hectic morning, the easiest path to breakfast often includes a cereal box. Open. Pour. Add milk. Eat. But, when it comes to nutrition, the choices in the cereal aisle don’t stack up evenly. Varieties with chocolate chips and marshmallows likely stand out as the unhealthier of choices, but seemingly healthy options, such as some granolas and sweetened whole-grain varieties, can be packed with added sugars and unhealthy fats, too — not to mention they can be seriously lacking in good-for-you nutrients.

Here’s more about all the nutrition benefits these picks provide, and what Spetz and other experts have to say about these cereal picks:

How to protect your retirement when your senior parent needs financial help

From the USA Today website

A growing number of seniors are finding themselves needing financial help. A study released this month by the Consumer Bankruptcy Project found that bankruptcy filings among people 65 and older have tripled since 1991. Sometimes medical costs are to blame; in other cases, seniors find that they have not saved enough for retirement.  Like Holmes, many adult children step in to provide their parents with financial relief.

“Out of love and concern, we often try to step up to help our family members, but we have to understand some of the trade-offs,” says Kamilah Williams-Kemp, vice-president of long-term care for Northwestern Mutual.

If you’re planning to offer financial help to mom and dad, here’s how to balance it with taking care of your own needs:

Off Track: The Best Places to Eat in Boston

From the Samantha Brown website

From chowder and cannoli to oysters and Italian fare, Boston’s food scene is full of character. I actually like visiting Beantown in the colder months. It’s such a dense and walkable town that you can easily check off historic sites (Faneuil Hall, the State House, King’s Chapel), warm up with a cup of chowder or a coffee and pastry, then head back out into the elements… rinse, repeat!

Here are a few of Boston’s must-have food experiences

“John has surpassed expectations for his survival” since disclosing last summer that he was suffering from an aggressive form of glioblastoma, “but the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict,” the McCain family said in a statement issued through his Senate office.

Famous Veterans: Sherman Hemsley

Sherman Hemsley had a tough upbringing and a disjointed family life, leading him to drop out of high school to join the Air Force, serving a total of 4 years in the military. After his service, he returned to become a mailman, and it was only later in life that he found his home in acting.

This man later became a 1970s and 80s icon leading comedic and heartwarming roles, most notably as George Jefferson. The charismatic roles he portrays makes it even more impressive that he came from such a rough early life.

7 ways to help grandchildren with college tuition

From the USA Today website

If you’re older than 65, odds are you have grandchildren and probably want to help them with college tuition.

While your generosity may be boundless, paying for a higher education is no small expense. The average in‐state, all-in cost (tuition, fees, room and board) for a four‐year public school was $20,770 in 2017-2018 and $46,950 for a four-year private school, according to the College Board.

And in 18 years, at the current rate of inflation, the all-in cost could reach $355,000 for fours years at a private school and $157,000 for four years at a public school for an in-state student.

So how can grandparents help? Here’s what experts had to say:
