This week, the Senate held a hearing to examine the rising cost of insulin. This is a huge concern for people with diabetes, as insulin prices have TRIPLED in recent years.
The ADA’s Chief Scientific, Medical, and Mission Officer, William Cefalu, MD, testified before the Senate, and he shared the findings and recommendations of the ADA’s Insulin Access and Affordability Working Group’s report on insulin prices, released this week.
Diabetes is a major health issue in Hawaii. While most diabetics start treatment with a pill regiment, eventually insulin becomes the treatment of choice. You probably know someone in your circle of family and close friends who are diabetics using insulin.

Not widely known, but Sandra Mascato served in the Hawaii Army National Guard. This 1975 photograph shows her at weapons qualification training at the Diamond Head crater firing range. (Yes, years ago there was a firing range in Diamond Head crater.)
But everyone knows Sandy Hashimoto as the retirement technician in the Human Resources Office (HRO). She counseled and helped technicians as they processed toward their retirement. Even after technicians retired, she was always there to answer your questions.
Special thanks to Stephen Lum for providing this photograph.

Clint Eastwood has contributed to over 50 films over his career as actor, director, producer, and composer. He has acted in several television series, including his starring role in Rawhide. He started directing in 1971, and made his debut as a producer in 1982, with Firefox, though he had been functioning as uncredited producer on all of his Malpaso Company films since Hang ‘Em High in 1968. Eastwood also has contributed music to his films, either through performing, writing, or composing. He has mainly starred in western, action, and drama films
He served in the U.S Army, though in a more different capacity than his well-known roles of gun slinging and horseback chases. He was a lifeguard on Fort Ord in Northern California. During his service, he was responsible for the safety of his fellow soldiers when they swam around the pools of the Fort.

Volcanoes have a lot of ways to kill people—caustic ash, superheated hurricane-like pyroclastic flows, incandescent mudslides called lahars…and, of course, lava. As the world watches the ongoing eruption of the volcano Kilauea, Mauna Loa’s neighbor to the east, you can see why Jaggar would resort to explosives, and why people have been trying to build lava barriers, unsuccessfully, since 1881.

Picture this: Your spouse has made a permanent move to a nursing home. You don’t have long-term-care insurance, Medicare won’t cover the cost, and you have too much money to qualify for Medicaid—but not nearly enough to afford the nursing-home bills. The monthly tab—easily $5,000 to $8,000 for a semi-private room—is rapidly depleting your nest egg. Now what?

This undated photograph shows a F-4C Phantom II flying over Oahu. The 199th Fighter Squadron flew Phantoms for 11 years – 1976-1987. Given this time frame, this photograph was taken at least 31 years ago.

It was a period of expanding mission requirements and deployments. Six of the Wing’s Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards were garnered during the Phantom period.
