Volunteer Mentors Needed for Hawaii Veterans Treatment Court

The Hawaii Veterans Treatment Court is seeking out Mentors to help out our Veterans in the Court. The Veterans (called Mentees) in the program are partnered with a Veteran Mentor and agrees to abide by a 4-Phase program that takes 18-24 months to complete. The Mentor provides social support and guidance throughout the program. Treatment is the focus, rather than punishment. And progress and compliance is monitored throughout the program. If the Veteran completes the program and graduates, the charges against him are dismissed.

The first Hawaii Veterans Treatment Court Graduation took place in April 2015. There are currently more than 220 Veteran Treatment Courts nationwide including the ones in Honolulu, Kona, Hilo, Maui, and Kauai.

This is an extremely rewarding way to give back to the community! Anyone interested, is asked to please contact Tim Fujino for more information – Cell (808) 342-4207 or e-mail: Timothy.H.Fujino.ctr@mail.mil

Check Six: NAS Barbers Point

Naval Air Station Barber’s Point was commissioned on April 15, 1942.

NAS Barber’s Point was named after Captain Henry Barber. On a voyage to China in 1796, Captain Barber, commanding the British brig Arthur, called at Honolulu for supplies. He left Honolulu about 6 p.m., October 31. At 8:10 p.m. Barber’s ship struck a coral shoal to the west of Pearl Harbor. The Arthur cleared the shoal but was driven on the reef and broke up.

Captain Barber and his crew of 22 men took to the life boats. Six drowned. The survivors landed near the point which ever since has been named after Barber. The Hawaiian name for this is Kalaeloa which means long cape (headland).

Barber’s Point was decommissioned by the Navy in 1998 and turned over to the State of Hawaii for use as Kalaeloa Airport.

Today Kalaeloa Airport (JFR) consists of 757 acres and is used as an alternate landing site for Honolulu International Airport and for general aviation purposes.

Imagine this: A major earthquake registering magnitude 7.7 strikes a town called Luxora, Arkansas, while also affecting a town called Aloha City in Perry County, Mississippi. There are reports of high amounts of injuries, casualties and major infrastructure damage throughout Aloha City.

As criminal activity is on the rise in rural areas, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is stretched thin. There isn’t enough law enforcement support to respond to the looters and to help injured civilians in hard-to-reach places. The Mississippi governor declared an emergency in Perry County, and enacted an Emergency Message Action, asking for support of outside states and local, state and federal agencies to respond to the affected region.

Max’s Restaurant supervisor honored with Department of Defense Patriot Award

L-R: Donna Shimizu, Manuel Soco and Judith Tomas

Judith Tomas, supervisor for Max’s Restaurant, Maui was presented with a Patriot Award December 11 in recognition of her continued support provided to Specialist Manuel Soco, a Hawaii Army National Guard soldier.  The award was presented by ESGR volunteer Donna Shimizu.

“I have been employed at Max’s for only a few months and much of that time, I have been deployed and attended training.  I appreciate the support provided by Judith,” stated Soco.

Tomas expressed 100 percent support for Soco’s military career.

“ESGR is a Department of Defense program whose primary mission is to encourage cohesive relationships with civilian employers and our Guardsmen & Reservists.  In addition, we provide USERRA briefings to our service members to ensure they know their rights and responsibilities under the law that protects their jobs when they return from a service period.  When we are out talking to them, we also talk about the opportunity to recognize their employers for superior support of their membership in the Guard & Reserve because they can’t do what they need to do without a solid foundation – at home and at work.  Supervisors like Tomas respects and supports her employee for his military duty.  Her understanding in allowing for flexibility in scheduling work and time off, demonstrates great care for her employee,” stated Shimizu.

ESGR seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. For more information about ESGR outreach programs or volunteer opportunities, call (800) 336-4590 or visit www.ESGR.mil.
