The Defense Department has scuttled efforts to merge the Defense Commissary Agency and the military services’ three separate exchange systems, finding that the plan would not result in the billions in savings originally projected in 2018.
In a report obtained by Military.com this week and sent to Congress in late August, defense officials said a new business case analysis of the proposal found no economic benefit to the consolidation and that it actually would cost the department an additional $1.5 billion.

Yesterday you felt fine, but today your nose is running and your throat feels scratchy. Yep, those are the first symptoms of a cold, which typically appear in adults about one to three days after exposure to a cold-causing virus.
What are you likely to feel like the rest of your week? Most often, symptoms of this upper respiratory tract infection crest around day four, and go away on their own within 7 to 10 days, says Aaron E. Glatt, MD, the chief of infectious diseases and a hospital epidemiologist at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, New York.
Keep in mind that while seasonal colds peak in the winter and spring, it is possible to get one any time of the year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Police Chief Lee Donohue presented Certificates of Merit and Letters of Appreciation yesterday to Hawaii National Guard members who aided police during a Pearl City hostage standoff in October.

Maj. Alika Watts and Capt. Rusty Spray received Certificates of Merit. Letters of Appreciation went to Maj. Gen. Edward Richardson, Col. Vern Miyagi, Lt. Col. Gervin Miyamoto, Chief Warrant Officer Alfred Paulino, Master Sgt. Bert Ogasawara, Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Kikiloa, Sgt. 1st Class Francis Hapenney, Staff Sgt. Ray Resurrection and Specialist Lance Taufaasau.
Shortly after midnight October 30, 1998, police requested National Guard assistance to safely transport residents and police in and out of Pacific Palisades. Its sole entrance and exit road were closed because of an armed hostage situation on Waimano Home Road.
Armored vehicles eventually arrived by 3 a.m., and shuttles began in and out of Pacific Palisades in about 36 round trips, crossing the gunman’s line of fire each time.

The internet abounds with retirement calculators that will help you estimate the size of the nest egg you’ll need so that you don’t outlive your retirement savings. It makes sense. Business gurus tell us you can’t improve what you don’t measure.
We set other measurable goals in our lives so what’s the problem with aiming for, say, $5 million in savings by age 65? It sets us up for complacency, says Vicki Bogan, associate professor of economics at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. “Anchoring on a specific number — and saying once you get [to] that number you’re done — is not the best idea,” she says. “The calculation of that number is predicated on a lot of assumptions.”

If you’re one of the 94 million American adults living with high cholesterol, you’ve no doubt heard how important it is to follow lifestyle habits such as a healthy diet and exercise. Doing so can help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides, a form of fat that’s in the blood, as well as help raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels.

Congratulations to Chief Fritz on his retirement. Thank you for your service.

This is the decade when retirement gets redefined. The era of trading a long career for a pension, a gold watch and afternoons on the golf course ended long ago. In its place, today’s retirees face growing financial pressure from multiple directions, including the looming fiscal crises for Social Security and Medicare.
This is the decade when retirement gets redefined. The era of trading a long career for a pension, a gold watch and afternoons on the golf course ended long ago. In its place, today’s retirees face growing financial pressure from multiple directions, including the looming fiscal crises for Social Security and Medicare.
The remedies for these financial pressures can sometimes exacerbate economic divisions. Retirement for the middle or working class is changing more than retirement for the wealthy. “There are already different levels of retirement,” says Jason Schenker, an economist and chairman of The Futurist Institute.

The Air Force’s “4+1” fighter plan for the 2020s, unveiled in recent months, will leave the service with a fleet that’s too small and improperly configured to deal with peer threats. What’s needed is a plan that emphasizes stealth aircraft; rapidly retires non-stealthy and expensive-to-maintain “legacy” airplanes; and doesn’t create gaps in USAF’s ability to control the air in a conflict, according to new analysis from AFA’s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.
Mitchell released a paper Oct. 25 offering an alternate fighter roadmap, saying the Air Force’s plan is budget-driven rather than strategy-driven.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis surgery, commonly known as LASIK or laser eye surgery, aims to correct vision by permanently reshaping the eye’s cornea using a laser. Although generally safe, not everyone is an ideal candidate for LASIK surgery. Post-surgery, some people may experience dry eye symptoms.
LASIK surgery is a procedure that uses lasers to help correct refractive errors in the eye and improve the eyes’ ability to focus.
During the LASIK procedure, a special laser reshapes the cornea to allow light to focus into the back of the eye, increasing the eyes’ focusing power and improving vision.
While LASIK can improve vision, it may not suit everyone, including those with dry eye. In some cases, dry eye may also be a complication of LASIK surgery.

Tactical Air Command (TAC) is an inactive United States Air Force organization. It was a Major Command of the United States Air Force, established on March 21, 1946 and headquartered at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. It was inactivated on June 1, 1992 and its personnel and equipment absorbed by Air Combat Command (ACC).

You’ve known your primary doctor longer than your best friend. She has been there through minor medical issues and larger health scares. And now, she is retiring.
It can feel like a real loss when a long-time physician — whether your internist or a specialist who has helped you through an acute or chronic illness — retires or simply decides to leave. That’s likely to happen more in the coming years. Fifty-four percent of doctors surveyed by the recruitment company Jackson Physician Search say the pandemic prompted them to reconsider their job. Of those doctors, 21% are considering early retirement and 15% are thinking of leaving the field entirely. (Fifty percent said they were considering changing employers.)
