Check Six – Early 1950s: 199th Fighter Squadron

Hawaii Air National Guard photograph

This undated photograph was taken outside the 199th Fighter Squadron operations building in Area 65 on Hickam AFB.  The squadron relocated to Building 3400 in 1960.

Retiree News asked Edward “Rick” Richardson, the retired Adjutant General for his memories and comments.

I talked to Tai Hong and Joe Ah New and here is what we come up with. I have included nick names or how they were informally addressed. This picture was taken before I got back from pilot training. I returned in December 1957 and Tai joined the squadron in June 1957 after serving in the USAF as a F-86H pilot. Joe Ah New joined the squadron also out the USAF while we were transitioning into the F-102 in 1961. We are still trying to determine who the 5 squadron members with question marks are. I don’t remember them transitioning into the F-86L in 1958. This picture brings back fond memories of serving with this special group of people.

10-Digit Dialing (10DD) Transition Begins

The FCC’s 988 Order requires all telecommunications carriers, interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, and one-way VoIP providers to make changes to their networks to implement 988 by July 16, 2022. To accomplish the goal of routing 988 directly to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), 82 area codes must transition to 10-digit dialing (10DD) before the implementation deadline.

What will you need to do?

Beginning April 24, 2021, you should dial 10 digits (area code + telephone number) to complete all local calls. This is known as a permissive dialing period because if you forget and dial just seven-digits, your call will still be completed.

Beginning October 24, 2021, you must dial 10-digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only seven-digits may not be completed, and a recording may inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. If you get this recording, you must hang up and dial again using the area code with the seven-digit telephone number.

Important Considerations. Important safety and security equipment, such as medical alert devices, and alarm and security systems must be programmed to use 10-digit dialing.  Many systems operate on 10-digit dialing by default but some older equipment may still use seven-digits.  Please contact your medical alert or security provider if you are not sure whether your equipment needs to be reprogrammed to accommodate the upcoming change to 10-digit local dialing.  Any needed reprogramming of alarm and home security equipment should be done during the permissive dialing period of April 24, 2021 to October 24, 2021 to avoid interruption of services.

Some other examples of services that may need to be re-programmed are:

– Life safety systems or medical monitoring devices
– PBXs
– Fax machines
– Internet dial-up numbers
– Fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates
– Speed dialers
– Mobile or other wireless phone contact lists
– Call forwarding settings
– Voicemail services and other similar functions

Be sure to check your website, personal and business stationery, advertising materials, personal and business checks, contact information, your personal or pet ID tags, and other such items to ensure the area code is included.

Hospitals Must Now Disclose Prices. Here’s How to Interpret Them.

From the nextavenue website

Need a knee replacement and wondering what your out-of-pocket cost might be? Under a new regulation from former President Donald Trump and just enacted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in January, hospitals must now tell you, as well as prices for other “shoppable” services that can be scheduled, from psychotherapy to routine blood tests.

The rule requires nearly all of the nation’s 6,000 hospitals post detailed price breakdowns on their websites for at least 300 services, 70 of which are dictated by CMS. The rest are left up to the hospitals’ discretion.

But, as with so much of health care, the reality of hospital price transparency is complicated.

What have we learned from the world’s largest nutrition study?

From the Medical News Today website

The NutriNet-Santé study is an ongoing investigation into the relationship between nutrition and health.

A range of factors influences health, including genetics, lifestyle, environmental factors, and diet. Unraveling the complex relationships between these factors is a challenge.

For many reasons, it is incredibly difficult to investigate the role of nutrition in health and disease. For instance, no two people eat the exact same diet, and very few people eat the exact same food 2 days in a row.

As it is neither feasible nor ethical to ask thousands of people to follow a strict diet for 10 years to see what happens, researchers have to find other ways of unpicking the links between diet and disease.

Hawaii Air National Guard photograph

From the Air Force Magazine website

The Air Force is considering changes to its pilot curriculum to curb the rising number of aviation accidents across the service, Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. said February 25.

The Air Force saw 72 accidents in fiscal 2020—10 more than in the previous year, Air Force Magazine reported February 23. Thirteen of the 72 accidents last year caused injury or death, according to Air Force Safety Center data obtained by the magazine.

Seven people died in incidents that occurred between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020. One was permanently, partially disabled, while nine others suffered broken bones or minor injuries.
