After You Have Been Hacked

Taps: Alexander “Blackie” Bell

After inquiries by several retirees, Retiree News researched and has confirmed the passing of Alexander “Blackie” Bell. A family member we spoke to reported that Blackie passed away in June 2017 at age 86.

Blackie flew with the 199th Fighter Squadron for many years. He later retired from the Air Force Reserve in the 1970s.

In accordance to Blackie’s wishes, there were no services and his ashes were scattered from an airplane over Kaneohe Bay.

Third Generation Guardmember Commissioned

Maj Gen Kenneth Hara and his wife, Myong, pinned their son, Justin with his gold bars on May 15, 2020. The ceremony took place in the State Department of Defense conference room. Justin’s uncle, Maj Gen (Ret) Gary Hara and his sister, Alicia, pinned his should lapel shoulder taps. Justin’s uncle, CSM (Ret) Dennis Hara rendered the first salute – via the internet from Hilo.

Justin’s grandfather, the late Henry “Shogun” Hara commanded the 2nd Battalion, 299 Infantry in Hilo for 13 years, and retired in 1988. All four of his sons, Gary, Dennis, Larry, and Ken followed his military path into the Hawaii Army National Guard.

When Justin enlisted in 2014, Ken Hara submitted the a paper about the entire Hara multigeneration family and the military service.

Justin is assigned to Company C, 1-299 Calvary. He is part of the unit’s deployment to Kauai supporting the COVID-19 response. 

The Shogun would be proud.

The caption accompanying the photograph said:

Lt. Col. Peter Matsuura (center in a black shirt), an orthopedic doctor from Hilo, poses with the Hawaii National Guard staff prior to his second mobilization in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Although mobilized for 90 days, Matsuura has sacrificed a lot He is one of the few practicing orthopedic doctors in Hilo and leaves behind his wife and two sons.

Dr. Matsuura’s first tour from February to August 2004, took him to the Army Hospital in Germany, His second tour, from July to October 2006 will take him to Iraq, where he will serve as a critical care physician. When the wounded (Iraqi or American) are brought in, the critical care physicians treat them and sent them to a higher care facility. Like the one where he spent his first deployment in Germany.

Air Force Awards $1.2 Billion Contract for First Lot of F-15EXs

The Air Force made the first payment on what could be a $22.89 billion acquisition of F-15EX fighters, the service announced July 13.

The $1.2 billion contract to Boeing covers the first lot of eight aircraft, which are to be used as test machines, and they will be deployed at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The first two aircraft will be delivered in the second quarter of fiscal year 2021, and the remaining six in fiscal 2023. “The strategic basing process is in work to determine the fielding locations” for subsequent lots, the Air Force said in a statement for the press.

A socially distanced promotion ceremony was held for Janet G. Lundberg from the rank of Lt. Col. to Colonel, July 10, 2020, Kalaeloa, Hawaii. Distinguished guests, family, and fellow Guardsmen were in attendance with a limited capacity due to the mandatory social distancing guidelines mandated by the state.
