Check Six – 1814: The Star-Spangled Banner

“The Star-Spangled Banner” is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the Defence of Fort McHenry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory. (Wikipedia)

Marvin Gaye gave a soul-influenced performance at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. It was one of the first of many adaptions by popular music artists.

7 Ways to Make Your Money Last in Retirement

From the Time Money website

Many people worry about running out of money in retirement. That’s understandable, since we don’t know how long we’ll live, what our future costs might be and what kind of returns we can expect on our savings.

The Air Force Is Ready to Scrap Older Aircraft to Prepare for Future Wars

US Air Force Photograph

From the Military.com website

The U.S. Air Force no longer wants to kick the can down the road on aging aircraft that may not be suitable for a fight against a near-peer adversary such as China or Russia.

Caregiving for A Loved One? How To Get The Help You Need

From the National Public Radio website

This year I joined the ranks of 40 million Americans who are family caregivers as I began to care for my 81-year-old father. As a physician, taking on this role has given me the chance to experience what so many of my patients and their families encounter.

As I’ve learned, no one is prepared to become a caregiver. It just happens.

My dad had been in good health until this past February when he had two disastrous falls, resulting in a subdural hematoma which nearly killed him. Fortunately, a neurosurgeon was able to drain out most of the blood under his skull, beginning a long, slow recovery process.

From the Kiplinger website

Off the Tesla website

For many new retirees it can be easy to go overboard having a ball checking off bucket-list items. To avoid overspending, and jeopardizing everything you worked so hard for, you need to have a realistic budget and stick to it.

Congratulations, you’re retired! After 30 years of hard work and savings, you have over $1 million in your 401(k). Wow, that’s a lot of money, you would think.

Feeling flush with cash, however, can lead to a problem. Overspending during the first few years of retirement is one of the biggest mistakes a recent retiree can make.

Insurance During Hurricanes. During one of last summer’s hurricanes, your webmaster’s new car arrived. The dealership called and said the car was ready for pickup.

However, we could not pick up the car because our insurance agent could not add the new car to our existing policy.

It seems many insurance companies stop issuing new policies or amending any existing policies when there is a hurricane warning in effect. This includes car, homeowners, hurricane, and other types of insurance.

Car Recalls: While there was a lot of coverage of the Takata airbags, automobile manufacturers continue to issue more recalls for both American and foreign vehicles. An earlier Retiree News post covered recalls and had a link to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) website. At their website, there is a you can enter you Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if your vehicle (cars and motorcycles) are subject to any recalls. We recommend you check your vehicle again: Is Your Car Subject to a Recall?
