10 Ways to Talk to Your Aging Parents About Their Finances

From the Kiplinger website

There’s a good chance that many adult children will have to get involved with their parents’ financial lives as they age. Yet, an overwhelming majority of adult children – 73% – have not had detailed conversations with their parents about their finances, according to a survey by GOBankingRates.

One of the primary reasons why survey respondents said they haven’t had “the talk” yet with their parents is because they don’t know how to have the discussion. Fortunately, talking to your parents about their finances isn’t as difficult as it might seem. That’s because there are several ways to start the conversation.

Here are 10 tried and true approaches from my book, “Mom and Dad, We Need to Talk: How to Have Essential Conversations With Your Parents About Their Finances.”

Decide which conversation starter will work best to get your parents to open up and start talking.

Guide to Colorblindness

From the WebMD website

What is it? Colorblindness isn’t really what it sounds like. Most people with the condition can see some colors correctly but can’t pick out others. “Poor color vision” might be a better name. Whatever you call it, it’s more common in men than women. About 1 in 12 men are colorblind, compared with about 1 in 200 women

“Adults should get a seasonal flu shot and internists should use that opportunity to make sure their patients are up to date on the latest recommended immunizations,” he advised.

Have you ever heard of the E-7A Wedgetail?

Off the Hawaii Air National Guard Facebook page

Hawaii Air National Guard Photograph

Have you ever heard of the E-7A Wedgetail? It’s an airborne early warning and control aircraft and flown by our partners from the Royal Australian Air Force. Airmen from No. 2 Squadron have spent a lot of time flying it alongside fighter aircraft throughout the duration of Sentry Aloha 19-2

It’s designed to communicate with allied aircraft and provide invaluable information of the tactical battle space. This advanced aircraft has sophisticated crew consoles which can track airborne and maritime targets simultaneously, along with a few more bells and whistles. It’s through longstanding exercises, such as Sentry Aloha, which allow us to improve interoperability with partners and maintain a permanent state of air superiority.

Mahalo for your support ‘Mates!’ We’re looking forward to working with you again in the future!

In fact, “that’s a pretty good number if you average out age and median salary across the U.S.,” said Nathan Voris, a managing director at Schwab Retirement Plan Services.

This Activities Program Engages and Calms People with Dementia

From the nextavenue website

For people with dementia, having nothing to do can contribute to agitation, frustration and a feeling of loss of control and well-being. It is a situation family caregivers often encounter.

Laura Gitlin, distinguished professor and dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University in Philadelphia has spent more than three decades developing non-pharmacological behavioral approaches to helping adults with dementia age in place.

Gitlin’s most recent approach, the Tailored Activity Program (TAP), has been shown to help manage critical behavioral symptoms in people with dementia while reducing the caregiver’s burden.
