Working past 65? Watch out for this Medicare pitfall that could cost you thousands of dollars

From the Los Angeles Times website

We can say two things for sure about the American workforce and its health insurance. First, more Americans are working past the traditional retirement age of 65. Second, more are taking advantage of employer insurance plans that include tax-exempt Health Savings Accounts.

Add these two facts together, and you end up with a pitfall that could cost unwary American workers as much as $2,700 a year in tax exemptions if they exercise their right to enroll in Medicare at 65. That pitfall exists because of the confusing way HSAs interact with Medicare, and because many big employers fail to help their older employees deal with the potential complexities—or even to know about them.

7 Best Foods for a Healthy Immune System

From the everyday Health website

When you’re battling an autoimmune disease, like rheumatoid arthritis (RA), lupus, or psoriatic arthritis, the right foods can play a part in your care.

One way to help an immune system that’s overworked is to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet, says Monica Piecyk, MD, a rheumatologist at New England Baptist Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School, both in Boston. A healthy diet starts with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and also includes low-fat dairy and protein.

Add in these specific foods to bolster your immune system

Off Track: Iolani School

In Hawaii, what high school you graduated from is often among the questions asked when you first meet someone. Public versus private, old versus new, town versus county, island versus island – some high school rivalries continue well into graduates’ old age.

The Images of Old Hawaii website periodically publishes articles about various high schools around the state. We will post links about these Hawaii high schools on their website periodically.

In 1862, following a plea from King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma to the Church of England, the first Anglican (Episcopalian) bishop and priests arrived to establish the Diocese of Honolulu.

In addition to Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma initiating the Cathedral of St. Andrew, they also founded two schools; ʻIolani School, which began as St. Alban’s School for boys.  Later, St. Andrew’s Priory for girls was founded. ʻIolani is now coeducational, while the Priory remains a school for girls.

Check Six: Brig Gen Wyrick Promotion Ceremony – One year ago

Brig. Gen. Wyrick with his father and wife

Brigadier General (Dr.) Brett Wyrick was promoted on November 4, 2016 – the Hawaii Air National Guard’s 70th Birthday. The promotion ceremony was held at Washington Place with many of his friends, and current and former Guardmembers in attendance.

Known to most as “Dugie” (his call sign), he served as a flight surgeon and later the commander of the 154th Medical Group.

During the pinning ceremony, Brig. Gen. Ryan Okahara graciously yielded to Dugie’s father, a retired fighter pilot. Dugie’s wife pinned the other shoulder.
