How to Pay Off Your Debt in Retirement

From the nextavenue website

While stepping into retirement might mean walking away from a job, many Americans are dragging financial baggage into this next stage: debt.

In recent years, the amount of debt retirees carry has grown, and the numbers are troubling from both a monetary and emotional standpoint. In 2016, 60% of 65+ households had debt, up significantly from 1992 when just 42% did, as Next Avenue has noted.

“It can be difficult to pay off debt after retiring, especially if you are on a fixed income,” says Katie Ross, education and development manager for American Consumer Credit Counseling, a national financial education nonprofit.

Here are seven ways to reduce, if not eliminate, your debt in retirement:

How to Help Protect a Family Member in a Nursing Home

From The New York Times website

Residents of care facilities can be especially vulnerable to respiratory illnesses. Here’s what you can do to help.

Photograph from Life Care Media Center website

More than 10 people in the United States have died and over 200 have been sickened after contracting the coronavirus that continues to spread around the globe.

The deaths have occurred in California and Washington State, including several residents at a nursing facility in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland.

The death toll at a facility with a population vulnerable to disease and infection, andindications that the virus was spreading for weeks, raises difficult questions: Are nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the United States prepared for a serious public health threat? If you have a loved one in a facility, should you be concerned about their health and safety?

And what, if anything, can you do?

VA intends to suspend enrollment of new GI Bill students at five educational institutions

From the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) website

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), acting within its required approval authority under the lawlimiting certain advertising, sales, and enrollment practices, notified the University of Phoenix, Career Education Corporation (Colorado Technical University, American InterContinental University), Bellevue University and Temple University, March 9, of the agency’s intent to disapprove the enrollment of new GI Bill students at these institutions.

After careful review and consideration of findings provided by the Federal Trade Commission and State Attorneys General Offices, VA has concluded there is sufficient evidence to support a finding that these schools have utilized advertising, sales, or enrollment practices that are erroneous, deceptive, or misleading either by actual statement, omission, or intimation against GI Bill beneficiaries, in violation of the law.

5 Things to Know About Prostate Cancer

From the U.S. News & World Report website

Those of us in the medical profession are faced with a dilemma when educating the public about diseases: We need to inform – without creating hysteria. That’s tough to do today; sometimes it’s the less reputable voices that become the loudest, and we begin hearing from patients who “read somewhere” that XYZ condition is caused by “doing something completely normal that basically everyone does.”

Misinformation is the last thing we need because it clouds the truth. And sometimes, changing the way information is delivered can go a long way toward creating understanding and equipping people with the facts to make the best, most informed health decisions. Prostate cancer is one of those conditions surrounded by some reasonably widespread misinformation, and this is an excellent place to help clear it up.

Off Track: Best saimin: Our Top 5

From the Frolic Hawaii website

In the pantheon of noodle dishes, saimin holds a special place in Hawaii. A lifelong companion, it can be a filling meal, a quick snack, a hangover cure.

In a culinary scene seemingly overrun by new ramen joints, a humble bowl of saimin reminds us of where we came from.

Saimin is every plantation immigrant story in one delicious bowl. Though there are Japanese and Chinese elements, no single ethnic group takes credit for its origins. Broth and noodles are its heart and soul. The broth usually starts with konbu dashi, dried shrimp and a little shoyu; from there it can go in a multitude of directions. The noodle isn’t a ramen noodle, a Chinese noodle or a pancit noodle. Saimin’s is usually a crooked noodle, irregular in shape. Toppings vary but typically you’ll see char siu, green onion and things like wonton, Spam, Portuguese sausage, choy sum, kim chee, kamaboko and finely sliced fried eggs.
