The body aches, cough, fever, chills, and sore throat that come with the flu are miserable enough.
But older adults are at a much greater risk of serious complications compared to young, healthy people because the immune system in general becomes weaker with age,” says William Schaffner, M.D., a professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn.

Sticking to a very-low-carb, moderate-protein, and high-fat diet (like keto) when you’re out at a restaurant can pose some unique challenges beyond resisting your favorite plate of fries.
First, the portions are skewed — and not in your favor. “Protein portions tend to be too large, and vegetable portions too small, leading to an unbalanced meal,” says Alicia Romano, RD, clinical registered dietitian at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
Healthy restaurant eating while on keto is possible. “A well-planned ketogenic diet has the potential to still be nutritious if you crowd the diet with healthful fats and protein choices, including when eating out,” says Romano. Here are 27 ways to do just that:

The loss of a partner or family member is a life-changing event laden with intense emotions. Whether the death is sudden or precipitated by an illness, the loss is just the same — real and painful.
There are no rules about how you should feel or how long it will take you to regain your energy and capacity to move on. Grief is difficult to avoid as well as the avalanche of financial and legal undertakings that will require your immediate attention.

Over the last few decades, the death rate from cancer dropped by 29% in the U.S., according to the latest data from the American Cancer Society (ACS). That, the ACS’s new study estimates, saved 2.9 million lives from 1991 to 2017, largely owing to declines in mortality from the four leading cancer types: lung, breast, prostate and colon.
From 2016 to 2017—the latest year for which data are available—the overall cancer death rate declined by 2.2%, the largest single-year reduction ever recorded. These new figures were reported in a study published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper will head to Naval Air Station Pensacola next week to meet with base leadership and the first responders who provided aid in the wake of a deadly mass shooting last month, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said Thursday.
While there, Hoffman said, Esper will provide air station leadership with a preview of new security measures being developed to prevent future incidents — measures that include physical installation security improvements as well as the enhanced vetting protocols that have been previously announced.

The military has failed to meet deadlines set by Congress for rulings on veterans’ requests to correct records blocking them from receiving benefits, according to a federal class-action lawsuit filed last month.
The suit brought by the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) charges that delays in processing the requests by the Boards for Correction of Military Records of the service branches amount to a denial of the due process rights of thousands of veterans.

Experts say it’s shaping up to be the worst flu season we’ve seen in a decade. As of right now, at least 2,900 people have died of the flu this season, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and flu activity is “widespread” in the country.
Flu season officially began in October and, since then, the CDC has estimated that at least 6.4 million people have gotten the flu, while 55,000 have been hospitalized with the illness. That’s a lot for this part of the season, says William Schaffner, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

There’s a fine tradition of military personnel and veterans being hard-chargers, but few go as hard as Dr. Jonny Kim.
Kim, 35, just finished training for NASA’s Artemis program that will see him, 11 other Americans and two Canadians in orbit around the Earth. They will also be eligible for missions to the moon and perhaps even Mars in the future.
