– US Air Force photograph

When a retiree or veteran passes, the family often has difficulties finding necessary military documents. Some of these documents are required validate eligibility for burial in a State or national veterans cemetery. The document search sometimes delays planning of funeral services.

In talking to Col (Ret) Ronald Han, Director of the State Office of Veterans Services, he provided information about the VA Form 40-10007, Application for Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility for Burial in a VA National Cemetery.

The fillable PDF form is linked below and the instructions for filling in the form is on the second page. Complete the application form and attach copies of your qualifying documents – DD Form 214, NGB Form 22, 20 year certificate – and submit. The form and documents can be submitted by email, mail or fax; the specifics are on the form.

After the Department of Veterans Affairs completes their review, you will receive an eligibility certification for internment on VA letterhead. Families pass this letter of authorization to the mortuary staff as they plan the retiree or veteran’s services.

KC-46 Program Finishes Tests Required for First Delivery

From the Air Force Magazine website

The KC-46 Pegasus program in early July finished the flight testing required for the first delivery of the aircraft in October, the service and Boeing announced Friday.  On July 6, Boeing and the Air Force finished all of the test points for the KC-46’s Remote Vision System, which controls the refueling boom, along with receiver certifications for the F-16 and C-17. Lastly, the KC-46 in June finished testing for receiving fuel from the KC-135. These tests were the minimum required for the long-delayed delivery of the first KC-46.

“With this milestone complete, the test program demonstrated a level of maturity that positions Boeing to deliver, and the Air Force to accept, an aircraft by the end of October 2018,” Air Force Service Acquisition Executive Will Roper said in a release. The test program is now moving on to the follow-on receiver testing and certifications that are required for operational testing, slated to begin next year, the release states.

Hawaii Had a Russian Adjutant General

From the Images of Old Hawaii website

He became a US citizen and took the name Sam Johnson. Johnson had no use whatever for “anything humdrum” and would do almost anything to get into the thick of things.

He made way to Honolulu in 1893 via the merchant marine and service in the Argentine Army (wounded, with decorations). Entered service as a private in the Hawaiian National Guard, rising to Brigadier General and Hawai‘i’s third Adjutant General.

High Blood Pressure Threatens Aging Brain

From the Health Day website

Here’s yet another reason to get your blood pressure under control: High blood pressure later in life may contribute to blood vessel blockages and tangles linked to Alzheimer’s disease, new research suggests.

Tracking nearly 1,300 older people until they died, scientists found markedly higher risks of one or more brain lesions among those with high systolic blood pressure readings.

Do your homework before moving into a retirement community

From the CNBC website

Retirees hoping to spend their golden years in an idyllic retirement community should slow down before signing over their savings.

Continuing care retirement communities, or CCRCs, give retirees the opportunity to age in one location, moving from independent living to assisted living and eventually skilled nursing care.

The arrangements are convenient and often luxurious, but some older Americans may overlook the financial due diligence they need to undertake before committing to a facility.

Retirement complications: Beware of hidden taxes when the career ends

From the USA Today website

Your taxes in retirement may be a lot more complicated than taxes while you’re working.

Social Security checks may or may not be taxed, depending on your income. You’ll pay federal income taxes on most retirement plan withdrawals, but additional state taxes depend on where you live. Tax rates on investments can vary as well.

Here’s what to expect when you hit retirement age:

Buildings 301 & 304 Demolished

Over the years, many Hawaii Army National Guard members performed duty in the Diamond Head Crater complex. With the HIARNG’s move to Kalaeloa, Building 303 (the old Property and Fiscal Office – PFO) is now part of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency facilities. Others like Buildings 301 and 304 were demolished, and the land will be restored to it’s natural state.

There is a lot of history and memories in those buildings.

Watch these Oregon Guard‬ members making a daring rescue

From The Drive website

Mount Hood, just an hour’s drive from Portland, is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. That beauty and easy access draws a lot of climbers and adventure seekers, a handful of which will require rescue. When alpine rescue teams can’t get the job done, Oregon’s National Guard choppers are brought in to execute what are often daring operations. This happened yesterday when an Oregon Army National Guard CH-47 was called in to extract a suicidal climber and a rescue team off of the mountain.

That High School Thing. As we comment in our series on local high schools, “In Hawaii, what high school you graduated from is often among the questions asked when you first meet someone.”

Retiree News recently had a post about the new 154th Wing Vice Commander, Col James Shigekane. Colonel Shigekane is a 1992 Air Force Academy graduate who spend all of his career in the active Air Force until his recent transfer to the Hawaii Air National Guard.

Read his military biography here.

After that post, we received a lot – a lot – of emails asked if he is originally from Hawaii and if so, what high school did he attend.

The colonel is local and graduated from James B. Castle High School in 1988. Go Knights!

Old Photographs. Retiree News has received great feedback about the increased number of old photographs. We always joke about Guard members in those old photographs – “was skinny”, “had hair”. Besides individuals, old photographs show old facilities, uniforms and aircraft.

We would like to post more old photographs but need your help. If you have any old photographs of Guardmembers, could you scan them to JPEGs and email them to me – retireenews@gmail.com. Special thanks to those who did send in old photographs it is appreciated.

Off Track: Paia / (Old) Maui High School

In Hawaii, what high school you graduated from is often among the questions asked when you first meet someone. Public versus private, old versus new, town versus county, island versus island – some high school rivalries continue well into graduates’ old age.

The Images of Old Hawaii website periodically publishes articles about various high schools around the state. We will post links about these Hawaii high schools on their website periodically.

Maui’s first co-educational high school opened in 1913 in a small frame building at Hāmākuapoko, close to bustling Pāʻia town and near the large plantation camps of East Maui. (OMHS) (It was known as Pāʻia High School, Maui High & Grammar School and, more commonly, Maui High School – now, Old Maui High School.)
