Monitoring heart health isn’t limited to using medical equipment found in the doctor’s office anymore. Digital health tools, such as the Apple Watch 4, smartphone apps, wearables, and “smart” blood pressure monitors, now provide people with the power to manage their health and well-being.

The Military Affairs Council; was established om 1985 as a part of the Chamber of Commerce Hawai‘i. It advocates on behalf of Hawai‘i’s military, as a major economic driver for the state. The MAC works to support Hawai‘i’s location as a strategic U.S. headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region. Comprised of business, labor and community leaders, as well as retired U.S. military leaders, the organization aims to bridge the military and the community, support the needs of Hawaii based military commands, and attract public-private ventures with the military.

Fort Armstrong was built in 1907 to protect Honolulu Harbor. It was named for Brigadier General Samuel C Armstrong, the son of a missionary to Hawaii. Armstrong (the son – namesake of the Fort) was born January 30, 1839 on Maui. He attended Punahou and later volunteered to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.
At the end of the war, Armstrong established what is now known as Hampton University in 1868. Perhaps the best student of Armstrong’s Hampton-style education was Booker T Washington.
The original garrison at Fort Armstrong was the 1st Coast Artillery Company, followed by the 104th Mine Co. operating the harbor mines. Also stationed there was the 185th Coast Artillery Company. They lived in tents for quite a long time; then temporary barracks were built – wooden structures that were continually occupied since January 1914.
On December 13, 1951, because the site was no longer needed by the military and was needed by the Territory of Hawai‘i for harbor improvements, President Truman transferred the land to the Territory of Hawai‘i.

For decades, the Air Force’s tanker fleet have logged hours transferring fuel, transporting troops and serving as flying ambulances. Soon, the tankers could add another mission to the list: relaying communications data as part of the Air Force’s new mesh network.
Air Mobility Command leaders are exploring whether aerial refueling aircraft could become a communications node in the Advanced Battle Management System, Lt. Gen. Jon Thomas, the organization’s deputy commander, told Defense News in a December interview.

Diets that call for avoiding either meat or all animal products get a lot of buzz for being healthy and contributing to weight loss. But there may be a catch to these diets, called vegetarian and vegan diets, respectively: a higher risk for a certain type of stroke.
In a study published in September 2019 in the BMJ, researchers observed that non-meat-eaters had a 22 percent lower risk for coronary artery disease, a type of heart disease, but a 20 percent higher risk for hemorrhagic stroke. At the same time, pescatarians, who eat fish but not meat, had the same risk of stroke but a 13 percent lower risk for heart disease compared with the meat eaters. (The authors did not formally compare these risks in fish eaters versus vegetarians.) To draw their results, the researchers followed 48,000 people in Great Britain for nearly 18 years.
Blacktower sourced data from government and nonprofit sites and calculated a cumulative score based on these factors:
Cost of living: The median cost of living in the United States is indexed at 98.5, derived from a national survey by the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center.
Crime: This number represents how many violent crimes were committed per 100,000 people in 2017. The crime rate in the U.S. was 394 crimes per 100,000 people.
Age: Age of population data was sourced from the Census. The average share of those 60 and older among the 50 states is 21.46%.
Property price: Average property prices were also sourced from Census data. The average among the 50 states is $263,544.
Life expectancy: The average life expectancy in the 50 states ranged from 74.5 to 81.5 years, based on data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent health research center.

A decade from now, roughly half of U.S. adults will be obese — with nearly one-quarter severely so, a new study projects.
The predictions by researchers at Harvard University paint a grim picture: By 2030, the prevalence of adult obesity will be at least 35% in every U.S. state, and in 29 states, the figure will top 50%.

Internet-connected devices have been one of the most remarkable developments that have happened to humankind in the last decade. Although this development is a good thing, it also stipulates a high security and privacy risk to personal information.
In one such recent privacy mishap, smart IP cameras manufactured by Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi found mistakenly sharing surveillance footage of Xiaomi users with other random users without any permission.

The Hawaii Air National Guard (HIANG) will be hosting a Sentry Aloha fighter exercise beginning Wednesday, January 8, and will run through January 22. Oahu residents, particularly those along the island’s southern coast may see an increase in military aircraft during takeoffs and landings at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Sentry Aloha is an ongoing series of exercises hosted by the HIANG’s 154th Wing enabling tailored, cost effective and realistic combat training for Air National Guard, U.S. Air Force, and other Department of Defense services. It provides U.S. war fighters with the skill sets necessary to perform homeland defense and overseas combat missions.
Sentry Aloha exercises have been conducted by the HIANG for over twenty years. This iteration of the exercise will involve approximately 1,000 personnel and 35 aircraft from eight states.
Visiting units include KC-135 Stratotanker air refueling support from the Wisconsin Air National Guard, F-15 Eagles from the California Air National Guard, F-16 Fighting Falcons from Alaska and radar aircraft from Oklahoma. The visiting aircraft will take part in simulated combat exercises with the 199th and 19th Fighter Squadrons’ Hickam based “Hawaiian Raptors.”
The 199th Fighter Squadron is part of the 154th Wing, the largest wing in the Air National Guard. The Hawaii Air National Guard is comprised of nearly 2,500 Airmen whose federal mission is to be trained and available for active duty Air Force operational missions.

The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act of 2019, better known as the SECURE Act, which originally passed the House in July, was approved by the Senate on December 19, 2019, as part of an end-of-year appropriations act and accompanying tax measure, and signed into law on December 20 by President Donald Trump. The far-reaching bill includes significant provisions aimed at increasing access to tax-advantaged accounts and preventing older Americans from outliving their assets.
